Jackson Hole, Wyoming was once a resort that flew under the radar. There are no big cities nearby; the few who knew about its awe-inspiring terrain and abundant snowfall were perfectly happy to keep the secret to themselves. Jackson was better known as a summer gateway to the spectacular natural beauty in Yellowstone National Park.

But a great thing doesn't stay unknown for long. As developers built million-dollar properties in the 90's and 2000's, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort upped its game with new lodges, a gorgeous new bottom-to-top tram and an ambitious plan to draw direct flights. A few years ago, it rose to the #1 ranking in Ski Magazine's influential list of best North American ski resorts — and America took notice.

With four days on the slopes — and ski-in, ski-out accommodations — we're including a daytrip to the spectacular nearby powder haven, Grand Targhee. We're very excited to host our fifth trip to Jackson. it's no secret why the BUMS love it here so much!

We reserve the right to cancel, reschedule, or make changes in the trip itinerary as a result of weather or safety considerations or as otherwise deemed necessary or advisable. If your trip is cancelled or rescheduled due to weather, snow, or mountain conditions, or circumstances beyond our control, you will receive a full credit for a future trip. All trip credits may be applied to any trip in the SKI BUMS future. There is no expiration date.

SKI BUMS is not responsible for the cost of any additional expenses that you may incur as a result of trip rescheduling or cancellation (airline ticketing fees, etc.).

To use a credit for a future deposit or payment, please
contact us directly.
Through October 1, you may cancel your spot at any time and receive a full refund. After October 1, the following cancellation fees apply:

For cancellations received from October 2 - October 31, $500 fee. For cancellations received from November 1 - November 30, $1000 fee. After December 1st, 2016: no refund.

In order to obtain our bulk group discounts, we must agree to a very strict cancellation policy. It's the nature of group travel. Think of your SKI BUMS booking as you would an airline reservation; even we find someone to take your place,
the cancellation fees still apply.

If you buy travel insurance, you can still receive a refund for a cancelled SKI BUMS trip.

To cancel your SKI BUMS trip, click here >
Buy travel insurance. We cannot stress this enough.

A travel insurer can provide a refund even when SKI BUMS cannot. In the circumstance that you need to cancel your trip because of work or health reasons, you should purchase travel insurance within 30 days of your initial trip deposit.

Even if you purchase travel insurance after this date, some coverage is much better than no coverage at all. Our cancellation policy is strict, and after cancellation fees kick in, a travel insurer may be your only chance for a full refund.

There are many travel insurers, and policies are very affordable. We especially recommend
travelinsured.com, and suggest you add the sports package to cover skiing & snowboarding activity.

Jackson Hole's imposing reputation is famous: this resort is challenging. Only 10% of the terrain is marked for beginners, and the expert areas are some of the toughest on the planet. In between these extremes, however, the resort is a huge playground that offers up some of the most fun terrain to be found anywhere. Just how hard is it? Read on for specific recommendations.

Beginners: we do not recommend this trip for beginner skiers and beginner snowboarders. There is very little terrain here for those who are learning to ski and ride. If you’re brand new, and you plan to spend each day in lessons, Jackson is a great choice. But know this: there will probably be no other beginners within our group. Therefore, please contact us if you're a beginner and you're considering signing up.

Intermediate: If you're a solid intermediate with good command of turning and controlling your speed in a variety of snow conditions, Jackson Hole will challenge and excite you. You'll finish the trip a stronger skier or boarder than when you began. The expert areas may be off-limits, but 40% of the terrain here is marked with a blue square, and it's fun! You'll really love Grand Targhee.

If you've never been skiing or riding out West, and blue square runs in the East sometimes intimidate you, this is really not the best trip to choose; please consider Telluride or Banff instead.

Advanced: We can't recommend this trip highly enough. Our Jackson Hole trips bring out some of the most highly skilled skiers and snowboarders in our whole membership, and it's thrilling to spend the day soaring through the spectacular slopes of Jackson Hole alongside skiers and snowboarders who can both keep pace with you and relate to you. If JHMR is still on your wish list, now's the time to go! On our last trip here, more than half of our participants were skiing & riding at the advanced level or above.

Expert: There's no doubt that Jackson Hole is the kind of resort that pushes you to the extremes; the chutes, cliffs, glades and ungroomed trails here are legendary. On previous Jackson Hole trips, a small group tackled the very toughest stuff that Jackson Hole has to offer. When you're in the mood to relax a bit, you'll have a huge crew of strong skiers and riders to keep you company.

Air transportation is not included. Read these recommendations closely before buying airfare.

Jackson (JAC) is the nearest airport, offering direct flights from Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, JFK, Newark, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, SLC, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington DC.

PLANNING YOUR AIR TRAVEL

You'll want to be smart about buying your airfare, keeping our itinerary and potential winter weather delays in mind. View the flight schedule to / from Jackson >

RECOMMENDATIONS | ARRIVAL: to make sure you don't miss our meet & greet, please plan to arrive in Jackson by 3 PM. Our hotel rooms won't be guaranteed until 3 PM; if you arrive earlier, the hotel is happy to store luggage for you. You'll want to give yourself some time to explore Teton Village, pick up rentals, etc. before our 8 PM gathering.

DEPARTURE:
Sunday is a travel day; book your flight at whatever time seems best for you, but keep this in mind: ground transfers usually pick up at our hotel about 3 1/2 hours before your flight time. In Jackson, an early departure makes for a very early alarm clock.

You may find that airfares are more affordable if you return on Monday; connect with the other BUMS on Facebook if you'd like to coordinate travel with others. See "Trip Extensions," below if you’d like to add an additional night’s stay at our hotel.

Ranked #1 in the SKI Magazine's annual survey of its readers favorite ski resorts in North America, Jackson Hole has long been famous for its terrain. Teddy Roosevelt took one look at the imposing peaks of the Grand Tetons and said "These are the first mountains I’ve seen that look like mountains should look."

And they ski and ride the way mountains should, too -- with massive bowls, wide open glens, undulating rolls and steep craggy chutes, dropping from a top altitude of 10,450' to 4139' at its base. It's got the largest vertical drop in the USA. Thankfully, it's also got some of the biggest snowfall averages in North America, covering all those rocky cliffs with big pillows of powder.

Despite its ambitious reputation, the vibe here is famously unpretentious. Its cowboy town history lends itself to an outdoorsy, laid-back, gay-friendly vibe that's made Jackson Hole a perennial SKI BUMS favorite. We were the first major LGBT organization to host an event here; they rolled out the red carpet for us in 2008 and have been warmly welcoming us ever since.

About an hour away, Grand Targhee has its own big fans -- for a very good reason. The views of the Grand Tetons are breathtaking, and the wide-open glades offer extended powder runs long after the locals have tracked-out the Hobacks. It's not quite as steep as Jackson Hole, making for a breezier cruise through Wyoming's winter wonderland.
SKI BUMS anticipates what you'll need to know, and when you'll need to know it. We email valuable pre-trip information to all our participants, in numbered Info Packs. You'll need to receive them and read them closely, so it's crucial that you've provided an email address to us that you check regularly. Gmail users: you need to take extra steps to see our emails.

Who's coming on the trip? Find out by joining our special SKI BUMS Jackson Hole Facebook Group. Whether you're simply curious about signing up or you're already on board, everyone's welcome to join this Facebook group. Feel free to invite friends, too -- it's a cool way to begin learning names of the skiers and boarders who you'll meet when we're in Wyoming! if you decide not to join us, we'll remove you from the group before the trip begins.

In advance of the trip, the BUMS use this group to share travel plans and coordinate meet ups for ground transfers. During and after the trip, they share pics and messages with one another. You'll see posts like "who's on the 1 PM flight into Jackson?” and "who's up for fresh tracks tomorrow?"

Of course, weather is impossible to predict, but SKI BUMS plans our trips with an eye on weather history. Late January / early February is the most reliable time for excellent surface conditions at Jackson Hole, and historic patterns have consistently delivered a major powder dump during the last 10 days of January. (At this period in 2013, we got 5 feet in 5 days.) Because of the craggy peaks and rocks within the Hobacks, it’s advisable not to visit Jackson Hole until these areas have had time to fill in. We’ve chosen these dates because they’re absolute peak season.

Our rooms in Jackson Hole are guaranteed after 3 PM on Tuesday, January 20th. If you arrive earlier, the hotel can store your bags until your room is ready.

After checking in, you'll want to explore Teton Village, get acquainted and pick up any rental ski / snowboard equipment. There's convenient ski and snowboard storage inside the hotel. You'll want to grab dinner, too; we recommend Il Villaggio Osteria inside the Terra. It's fantastic.
Our trip officially begins at 8 PM with a meet & greet welcome reception. In our hotel’s private event space, you'll meet the SKI BUMS trip leaders and the other participants. We’ll have free light appetizers, so feel free to show up hungry.
This trip has a minimum of 20 participants. If we fail to meet our minimum number of registered participants by 60 days before the trip, the trip may be cancelled. In that event, those who have signed up for the trip will receive a full refund.

Our trip leaders design an itinerary that gives you the best way to explore the terrain and get to know your fellow BUMS. It's published in a printed handout and updated on a devoted Twitter feed, with up-to-the-minute announcements you can receive on your cell phone.

The on-mountain adventure begins bright and early on Wednesday. We divide into skill level groups that help you identify the other skiers and snowboarders who enjoy the same terrain that you do, and then we divide and conquer the mountain! Learn about our skill level groups. >

To make our intro even more fun, we've pre-arranged guided tours on our first morning. Jackson Hole's impeccable instructors will lead each group to help you get your bearings and find the best spots in the mountains. Each day, the itinerary will name a meet up time and place each morning to get things started. We gather as a big group for lunch, and toast to the end of each day with après-ski... before hitting the huge hotel hot tub!

In general, you'll spend most of the day in a smallish group of four or five skiers or boarders. You and your group will set your own pace, and it's common to mix it up with a few different groups throughout the week. This is your vacation, so you're always free to break away and do your own thing.

Our trip includes a trip to the famous historic Jackson Town Square, home of famous antler archways and some of the coolest bars in the American West.

For three of our evenings, we'll dine together at some of the areas best restaurants. Friday night is free for you to enjoy as you like -- you may want to head out on the town with your new friends, or take a night to chill out with room service in our hotel. The BUMS who take our trips to Jackson Hole are here to ski and board, first and foremost -- and after a hard-charging day on the mountain, you'll sink into our plush hotel beds for a very good night's sleep!

Learn more about how SKI BUMS trips work >
You must have a cell phone that will work while we are in Wyoming. It will need to be able to receive domestic SMS text messages, even when you are not on Wi-Fi.

Trip leaders send up-to-the-minute text message alerts with itinerary information, transportation pickup times, lunch locations, weather advisories, and more. Additionally, the other trip participants text one another to coordinate their plans on the mountain. If you are traveling to Wyoming from a foreign country, we recommend that you budget for an international plan that includes voice, data and SMS messaging for use in the USA.

On the mountain: SKI BUMS requires our trip participants to wear helmets while skiing & riding. See our helpful guide, How to Dress for the Mountain, for suggestions. Jackson has many, many gear & apparel shops, but prices will be a bit elevated, so pack wisely.

Off the mountain: all our events are casual dress. As you can pretty easily see, the BUMS are a casual, laid-back crowd; we aren't flashy. Be yourself, and be comfortable -- just as you would on any skiing / snowboarding trip.

A few vital packing tips:

+
Pack your skiing and snowboarding apparel in your carry on bag. Delayed luggage can arrive days late; you won't want to have to buy all new stuff to make it onto the mountain.

+ Be sure to pack
winter wear shoes with a good tread; expect snowy, icy streets.

+ Don't forget
sunscreen for the high-altitude UV exposure, and a swimsuit for the hotel's pool!

SKI BUMS detailed trip itineraries are designed to be viewed on any smart phone. Additionally, our trip leaders send up-to-the-minute alerts that you'll receive on your phone via SMS text messaging. It allows us to keep you in the loop and make smart adjustments based on the weather.

On Saturday night, we'll be celebrating our final night in style with a trip to the best restaurant in town, the award-winning Snake River Grill. This gourmet meal features fresh local produce, organic locally sourced game and a warm Western rustic setting in the heart of Jackson's historic Town Square. Afterwards, you can mosey on up to the famous Million Dollar Cowboy Bar. Its famous saddle bar stools make for great Instagram selfies.

Additionally, we’ll enjoy a delicious dinner from the cooking team at Spur, one of the top-ranked restaurants in Teton Village. They’ll prepare our own custom dinner in a private dining room just for us on Thursday night. On prior trips, both of these restaurants were a big hit with the BUMS.

Thursday and Saturday night's dinners are prepaid and included in the trip price.

All other meal costs are up to you. Breakfasts are easy to come by; the Terra has a great on-site cafe, and the breakfast burrito in the base lodge is extra tasty. As always, we'll name a meeting spot for lunch each day. As for dinners, we’ll have a group dinner reservation on Wednesday night at the legendary
Mangy Moose, which features delicious classic Americana cuisine. You’ll simply pay for whatever you choose to order. Friday night is a ‘free night’ for you to dine wherever you wish.
We are happy to arrange roommates for you. Typically, half of our participants ask us to match them up with a roommate. We'll ask a few easy questions and accommodate your preferences.

If you prefer your own room, you may select a single occupancy. We collect the single occupancy supplement when you sign up (View "Pricing & Payment" below). Please note: there are only a small number of single occupancy slots available. Single occupancies tend to sell out very quickly.
Ranked #2 on Conde Nast Traveler's list of America's 50 best ski resort hotels, the LEED-certified Hotel Terra is a swanky ski-in, ski-out hotel right at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. With hip decor, a gay-friendly staff and a delicious restaurant on property, we love the Terra and they love us right back. After a challenging day on the slopes, you can visit its excellent spa or soak your tired muscles in the big rooftop hot tub as the sun casts a warm rosy glow on the Grand Tetons. We’ve stayed here in four previous SKI BUMS trips; it’s a superb property all around.

All rooms feature a Zuma air bathtub; treat your legs to a bubble massage bath at the end of the day. Showers include rain showerheads and eco-friendly bath products. Each room has a HD flat screen TV, mini fridge and complimentary in-room wi-fi.

Best of all, the hotel has an ideal location. You and ski and ride directly to the back door, and it’s just steps away from the entrance to the Jackson Hole tram.

Cars aren't necessary while we're in Jackson. Most of what we'll do is in Teton Village, and there are convenient, well-run public buses which connect Teton Village to the town of Jackson. Additionally, private taxis are always within reach. See Ground Transfers to arrange travel between the airport and our hotel.

For our daytrip to Grand Targhee, bus transportation there & back is included in the trip price.

The Jackson Hole and Grand Targee resorts are larger than they might seem on paper, click each trail map below to see more. Find nerdy mountain statistics here: Jackson Hole > Targhee >
Our trip includes a guided ‘welcome tour’ of Jackson Hole on our first morning from Jackson Hole’s incredible instructors. As we experienced on our last trip here, this is a fantastic way to meet the staff and get a sense of the lay of the land. If you’d like to arrange for group or private lessons at JH, it’s smart to make a booking before we arrive. Post a message on our FB group or contact us for recommendations.
About half of our participants will rent skis or snowboards. We do NOT recommend reserving equipment in advance; it’s unnecessary in a place like Jackson.

After you’ve arrived at our hotel, we recommend walking to
Teton Village Sports — conveniently located just steps from our hotel. Tell them SKI BUMS sent you and you’ll receive a group discount. They’re great.

Jackson Hole is one of the gateways to the epic Yellowstone National Park, and it’s gorgeous in the wintertime. They even offer guided skiing tours of the canyons. We highly recommend visiting the park before or after the dates of our trip. Especially if you’re a European member who is traveling to the USA, a Yellowstone trip could extend your North American holiday to make it truly unforgettable.

To book a winter stay in Yellowstone, click here >

We suggest the following itinerary:
+ Check in on Friday, January 28th or Saturday the 29th
+ Tour Yellowstone on Saturday, Sunday and Monday
+ On Tuesday the 31st, transfer to Teton Village for the SKI BUMS group trip

AllTrans is the town's main airport transfer company; they're friendly, efficient and affordable. Contact them to book a reservation about 3 weeks before our trip. Alternatively, private taxis are available; get pricing here. It’s about a 40-minute ride from the airport to our hotel.

We don't recommend renting a car for this trip, but if you do want the extra mobility, the hotel offers both free parking and paid valet parking.
