One of the best things about a SKI BUMS trip is how easy everything is; all you've got to do, really, is show up and have a great time. But there are a few things you'll want to do between now and the trip to guarantee that you have a great time.

Here are some quick
tips, some helpful advice, and a guide to the cool discounts that you receive as part of your SKI BUMS membership.
You'll receive several pieces of important information from us between now and the day of departure, so keep a close eye on your email inbox.

If you haven't done so yet, you'll want to add
announcements@ski-bums.org to your 'safe senders' list or address book. We send these announcements to a whole group of travelers, which increases the chances of it getting misdirected to your SPAM folder. You'll want to pay extra close attention to our emails with this subject line: MEMBER UPDATE. If your inbox is a busy place, these are the ones to focus on.

For our Western trips, we collect
flight information to help coordinate ground transfers; we may also be sending out advance reservation information for discounted equipment rentals.

For our Vermont weekends, we coordinate
carpools and lodging assignments.

All of these emails have a key
time component; be sure to pay attention so you won't be left out in the cold. ;)
If you're in the New York City area, our daytrips are a fantastic way to prepare for a trip to the big hills. Skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels come for the fun; it's a great way to get in skiing / boarding shape, try out new gear, and meet a whole lot of BUMS in one fell swoop.

Our 2010 daytrips are:

Saturday, January 9 -- Hunter Mountain, NY (aka "Bunny Hill" -- half the bus will be learning to ski or board!)

Saturday, January 16 - Windham Mountain, NY

Wednesday, February 10 - Blue Mountain, PA (aka "Sick Day," where you're invited to call in sick!)

Saturday, February 13 - Mountain Creek, NJ

Saturday, March 20 - Belleayre, NY

To those in NJ, PA, DC and upstate NY: you're always welcome to drive to meet us at the mountain; we simply ask you to make arrangements with us in advance. See our daytrip page for more info.

To those outside NYC -- SKI BUMS hopes to host daytrips in additional locales in the coming seasons as our membership expands. Until then, you're welcome to use our Facebook page to connect with other members in your area to go take some turns. Visit our Facebook page >

Head's up: a focus on helmets

SKI BUMS is continuing our campaign to encourage ALL skiers and riders to wear protective helmets when skiing and riding. Helmets are available at the rental shops for all our destinations, but want you to strongly consider purchasing one. Helmets greatly reduce the
severity of head injuries -- it can make the difference between a funny bonk on the head or a serious concussion.

It's very important to make sure you're properly outfitted for snow sports. It's not so much about rocking the latest waterproof fashions -- it's about making sure you're safe and comfortable when you're out on the mountain. If you're brand new to skiing and snowboarding, check out our informative article on what you should focus on when planning what to wear here.
Skiing and snowboarding gear often isn't cheap, but with your SKI BUMS membership, you can rock out some fantastic deals from America's top skiing and snowboarding outfitters.

Backcountry.com is the top skiing and snowboarding retailer in America -- and they're also a sponsor of SKI BUMS. They carry pretty much everything, and SKI BUMS members receive a very generous discount. See your Membership Registration info email for details on how to use it, or let us know if you'd like us to pass the info along.

Additionally, SKI BUMS sponsors special event nights and discounts from our local sponsors and gear shops -- see the Member Update emails for more info on when we're hosting one in your area. They're usually a fantastic way to save money --
up to 20 - 30% off!

Friend us.

Do you feel like you're the last one in the universe who doesn't have a
Facebook account??? Well... we're going to give you yet one more reason why you're missing out if you're not there: the more than 600 LGBT skiers and snowboarders hanging out on our nifty Facebook Fan page.

Check it out >

The singular best reason to become a "Fan" of SKI BUMS is this: it makes it super easy to stay in touch with the BUMS who you're going to meet this season. Additionally, we host Facebook "events" for each of the trips we host, which allows you to connect in advance of the trip with our other participants. We also put announcement and party reminders there, and share fun tidbits of news from the skiing and snowboarding universe.

Tweet, tweet!

A year ago, none of our members had even heard of
Twitter; now, it's the 140-character playground from nearly everyone in the skiing & snowboarding industry. Joining Twitter doesn't have to be a time-eater; but you'll find that when you're on the mountain this winter, it's a simple, easy, and highly effective way to trade messages with other SKI BUMS participants on where you're meeting up, which trails have the best snow, and who's ready to head in for après-ski -- all from your cell phone or PDA. SKI BUMS will name a Twitter hashtag for all of our 2010 trips -- and invite you to use it to connect, report, and and share TwitPics from mountains all over the world.
