"This was the best idea of the whole SKI
BUMS season," said several of our members,
after we'd arrived at the notoriously crowded
Hunter Mountain on a Wednesday and found
the place absolutely empty. "It's really not a
bad mountain, when there's no one in your
way," we heard. And, we agreed. Hunter's got
some great terrain, the longest vertical in the
area, and without the throngs of people
everywhere, it's a downright fun place to ski
and ride. Oddly enough, one other bus --
another group called SKI BUMS, but based in
New Jersey... and straight -- had come up for
the day, and when their group leader came
on board our bus to make sure our members didn't accidentally get confused and board
their bus, we knew we were in for a unique day. We assured them not to worry. ;)
The conditions on the East Coast left much to be desired this year, but we happily found
our way to the man-made trails for what was bound to the last time on skis or a board this
season for many of us. By 4 PM, Hunter's lounge felt like an authentic mountaintop gay
bar; our 50 members outnumbered everyone else! After a few choice tunes in the juke
box, some good cold beers, and a few fun stories from the 7 newbies who learned to ski
for the first time, and we were ready to hop on board our bus for the après ski party back
to the city. "We have to do this again next year!" the BUMS on the bus echoed. "Yes, more
sick days! Next year I'll bring my boss!"
