No one seems terribly sure where the term bluebird day originated.

We think it must have started in Utah. After our first night at Snowbird, we woke up to discover a bright blue sky and nine inches of fresh snow ready to welcome us to our first day on the spectacular slopes of the Wasatch. This was our fourth SKI BUMS trip to Utah, but the first time we'd stayed up in Little Cottonwood Canyon. Being able to wake up to the sight of the sun rising over the snow capped peaks surely isn't something we'll easily forget, not to mention the family of friendly-looking coyotes who occasionally wandered across the hills. There were outdoor hot tubs surrounded by towering pine trees, wood-burning fireplaces in the hotel, and a whole lot of terrain
without a whole lot of skiers crowding onto those lifts.

We were making fresh tracks daily.

Our first day began at
Snowbird. While some of us immediately headed for the soft, fluffy untracked pow of Mineral Basin, others took a day to explore their very first day in the American West. Snowbird serves up an ample challenge, no matter who you are, and when day two took us to neighboring Alta, we could hardly believe how fortunate we were. Those who both ski and ride were happy to buckle up for a day of two-planking here -- Alta is one of America's few resorts that doesn't allow boarding -- and the mountain handed us another gorgeous sunny day of unparalleled dry powder. After hiking and traversing into Catherine's Area, Devil's Garden and more, we were ready to relax over a delicious lunch at Collins Grill... easily one of the best on-mountain lunch spots in the West.

Our evenings were laid-back and casual, beginning with a comparative
beer-tasting at the delicious local Porcupine Pub & Grille, and wrapping up with a tasty dinner at the Cliff Lodge's Aerie restaurant, but little could compare to the spectacular daytrip we took to Snowbasin... one of the mountains that remains a SKI BUMS favorite. A snow storm arrived shortly after we did, and the visibility wasn't on our side... until the afternoon came, when fresh snow and good advice led us to some of the best skiing we'd had all week. We capped it off with a cool après-ski in the giant fireplace luxury of the Snowbasin lodge and finished with a highly memorable bus party home that'll go down in SKI BUMS history. :)

The sun came out again the next morning... just in time for some of us to head back home while a few others stuck around for an extra day. It was a classic March trip to Utah, and there's nothing like a bluebird day at the Bird!
